AISA Opens Applications for Cyber Security Scholarship Fund to Boost Diversity and Grow Australia’s sovereign cyber capabilities

Canberra, Australia – The Australian Information Security Association (AISA) is excited to announce the opening of applications for its Cyber Security Scholarship Fund.

Announced at the Australian Cyber Conference in Canberra, this pioneering initiative aims to enhance Australia's sovereign cyber defence capabilities by promoting diversity and inclusion within the cyber security sector.

This significant announcement comes at a critical juncture, as the industry faces a projected shortfall of 30,000 skilled cyber security professionals within the next four years.

Amidst rising cyber crime rate and increasingly sophisticated cyber threats, the demand for a well-rounded, educated, and diverse cyber security workforce is more urgent than ever.

AISA's scholarship fund seeks to grow and expand Australia’s cyber skills pipeline by empowering underrepresented groups—such as women, individuals from rural areas, those experiencing financial hardship, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians—to pursue careers in cyber security.

Akash Mittal, Chair of the AISA Board, emphasised the importance of these scholarships: "As we navigate through an era of escalating cyber threats, our scholarships are crucial in securing our nation's digital future. We encourage individuals passionate about cyber security to apply and urge industry partners to support this vital national effort."

The initiative underscores the critical need for collaboration between industry, government, and academia, aligning with the goals of the 2023-2030 Australian Cyber Security Strategy. "Investing in a sovereign and diverse cyber security workforce is essential for safeguarding and advancing Australia's digital interests," Mittal added.

To jumpstart the initiative, AISA is offering five scholarships totalling an initial investment of $180,000, with plans to expand the programme through additional industry contributions.

As the leading peak body industry association that is both a nonprofit and charity, AISA calls for donations to the Foundation Scholarship Fund to directly support cyber security education. Contributions are tax-deductible and will significantly benefit deserving candidates from underrepresented groups.
