Topic: The CISO and the Gunslinger

This is the extended version of a talk recently delivered as a Plenary keynote at the opening of the AusCERT 2019 conference on the Gold Coast.

This talk was inspired by an unlikely source – laughing at the misfortune of someone depicted in a video that was shared on LinkedIn!

You’re in for a treat as we laugh together and share some war stories about the role of the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), looking at some of the different “types” of CISO’s depending on their entry into the role. You’ll gain some valuable insight if you’re considering a transition into the role of CISO in the future.

We’ll also discuss the role of Penetration Testers, exploring some of the common stereotypes and pondering whether there is a price that our industry pays for the disconnection between business practitioners and highly-technical experts – and we conclude by considering ways to close the gap and work together for better security outcomes.

Speaker: Michael McKinnon, PS&C Security

 Michael McKinnon is the Strategic Information Security Advisor at PS&C Security - a consulting group that consists of leading cybersecurity practices such as Pure Hacking, HackLabs, Securus Global, and Certitude. 

Michael advises clients on all aspects of information security from the boardroom to the basement; helping provide strategy, governance, risk management, compliance and technical assurance to some of Australia's best-known brands.
