Hobart Day Month: Meeting Name
"Spectre and Meltdown - what they mean for you"  with John Bird

Spectre and Meltdown - what they mean for you

2018 started with a bang when Google's Project Zero cybersecurity lab announced the potentially devastating Spectre and Meltdown family of chip based vulnerabilities. Much has been written in the IT news about the severity of the vulnerabilities, who they impact, issuing and recalling of patches and the potential performance implications of the mitigations.

What are Spectre and Meltdown, how do they work and how worried should you be? This session will be an easy to follow overview of the vulnerabilities, how attackers might exploit them and what you can do right now to reduce risk. Understanding the vulnerabilities, and what caused them, is key to prioritising your remediation effort

Speaker: John Bird

As a Senior Sales Engineer, John Bird has extensive experience as a vulnerability and risk management advisor, responsible for helping customers identify and tackle their biggest security challenges. Previous roles include engineering and sales at CA Technologies and Architectural Software Design, plus John has presented twice at Ruxcon on topics such as reverse engineering platforms and programming on GPUs.

Networking drinks will be held at a nearby venue following the presentation.
