AISA VIC Branch Meeting | 9 April 2024

AISA Branch Meeting
Hosted by the AISA Victoria Branch, please join AISA for our April Branch meeting and networking opportunity with an interactive presentation from guest speaker Adam O'Donnell.

Presentation Title:
Expert 2.0: Helping your SMEs bridge the gap between technology users and technology specialists

In this session Adam plans to address soft skills issue for technical experts. Perhaps the toughest transition to make in any organisation is from “expert” to “leader of expert teams”.  Success is no longer dependent solely on technical skills but also the ability to foster collaboration, build cohesion and deal decisively with team members who aren’t performing or whose behaviour is undermining team effectiveness.

Those soft skills aren’t typically the sweet spot of most technical experts and if overlooked, productivity is affected, stress rises, staff retention plummets and customer relationships suffer.

This talk explores the common pitfalls that newly appointed technical leaders commonly make, how organisations can help them avoid them and how to avoid team meetings looking like an episode of the Big Bang Theory.

After the presentation light refreshments will be served and guests will have the opportunity to ask the speaker questions.

Adam O'Donnell, Keynote Speaker, Trainer and Facilitator - Founder of Adam O'Donnell

Adam O’Donnell is a nerd-turned-ninja.  His career started in IT where he spent many hours crawling around under computer room floors and playing with X.25 networks.  Then, in search of something less uncomfortable, he took a bit of a diversion into the Army where he eventually served with both British and Australian Special Forces on peacemaking and counter-insurgency operations around the world.  At least they gave him body armour and knee pads.

It was during this period that he learnt - the hard way - that the Human Operating System was a bit more complicated than unix and not particularly fault-tolerant.  He learnt a lot about leading teams in some of the harshest classrooms on earth.

After the Army, he found that those same lessons served him well leading security programs for major enterprise and government organisations.  He now helps organisations attract the best talent, harness their knowledge and direct their initiative to deliver outstanding results, regardless of what life throws at them.
