Prof. Syed Munir Khasru

Chairman, IPAG Asia-Pacific & Senior Advisor, AISA

 

Prof. Syed Munir Khasru is Chairman of the international think tank IPAG Asia Pacific, Australia. An MBA from the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania, US, he is the only person to be Co-chair of two Task Forces (i) Digital Transformation and (ii) SDG for the G20. He has written nine policy briefs for the G20 Leadership Summits from 2017-2022. He also is a Co-chair of Task Force for G7.

Prof. Munir is a Global Expert of the World Economic Forum (WEF) and Member of (i) SDG’s Global Councils by UN, World Bank, & OECD and (ii) Energy Leaders’ Forum, Asian Development Bank (ADB). Prof. Munir is one of the chairpersons of UN’s Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) which is under the offices of Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary General and led by Prof. Jeffrey Sachs of the Columbia University. With presence of IPAG in five continents and Prof. Munir’s standing in the international knowledge community, he brings in global exposure, multifunctional expertise, strategic vision, and policy perspective in support of AISA’s growth and development within and beyond Australia. 

Prof. Munir is an international expert on cyber security, counter terrorism, & transnational crimes. He has regularly spoken in annual conferences held by AISA from 2018 onward. Prof. Munir has written for the Australian Cyber Risk Leaders Magazine, advocating for Australia’s having a strong, robust, and pragmatic international cyber engagement strategy. He is the editor of two international publications on (i) The Digital Age, Cyber Space, and Social Media: The Challenges of Security & Radicalization and (ii) Harnessing the Fourth Industrial Revolution: Challenges and Opportunities. In addition to cyber, Prof. Munir has provided international training and capacity building to senior law enforcement and intelligence officials on areas like (i) building regional strategic alliances on countering transnational crimes (ii) sharing intelligence, technology and resources (iii) adopting technological breakthrough and innovation. 

Under his leadership, IPAG Asia Pacific, Australia has organized important international events which includes (i) Conclave in partnership with AISA on September 4, 2022 in Bali, Indonesia during the Indonesian G20 Presidency. In participation of leading experts from the G20 countries, it explored the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in unleashing possibilities while safeguarding against the inherent risks and ethical issues. (ii) Conference on “Non-Traditional Economic and Security Risks in a Globalized World” in partnership with the Research and Information System (RIS), a think tank affiliated with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India in New Delhi on November 28, 2019. (iii) Conference on “Digital Age & Cyber Space: Maximizing Benefits, Minimizing Risks, Unleashing Creativity” in New Delhi in August 28-29, 2018. IPAG, was joined by the Institute for Defense Studies and Analyses (IDSA), a think tank affiliated with the Ministry of Defence, Government of India in co-hosting the event.

Prof. Munir’s opinions and commentaries are carried in some of the leading international media outlets which include Project Syndicate, World Economic Forum, Straits Times (Singapore), South China Morning Post (Hong Kong), Nikkei Asia (Japan), and Bangkok Post (Thailand). In India, he writes for the Hindu and the Times of India. BBC World Services interviews him for expert’s comments & opinions.
