We have tried preventing cyber attacks with technical controls and in addition have tried strong governance and compliance. Both of these have their place, but we are still being compromised. Why?

Hunting for Hackers - Why preventive measures are only part of the cyber solution

The fact that cyber attacks have happened from the very early days of the internet is not lost on many in the industry, but the Sony hack launched our industry into the forefront of the everyday person. Since that day cyber news stories have only increased in number. We have tried preventing these attacks with technical controls and in addition have tried strong governance and compliance. Both of these have their place, but we are still being compromised. Why?

Bruce Schneier recently spoke about the process of security being: Prevent, Detect and Respond. Do we rely too heavily on the preventative technologies to be able to tick the cyber check box? Companies continue being breached and adversaries are staying in these networks undiscovered for over 100 days. Is the initial breach just the beginning and can you really win the game of Cyber security?

In this month’s presentation, Duncan Alderson will explore why preventative measures are only part of the solution, the importance of detection and some ways to hunt for hackers in your own network.
