Are you or your business impacted by the new Data Breach notification law?
On February 22, 2018 new data breach notification law came into effect. Under this law, businesses will be required to alert the Australian Information Commissioner and all of its effected clients if they get hacked.
As a business operator within NT jurisdiction, are you or your customer impacted by this change?
General understanding around what, who and how this change will impact, to many it is still unclear.
To clarify, we have organised two experts to talk to you and share insights on the following:

Speaker 1: Helaine Leggat - Co founder and director of Information Legal Private Limited.

Helaine Leggat is an internationally recognised global expert in information and an Australian lawyer. One of a few lawyers in the world to hold the CISSP, CISM, CIPP and CIPP/IT Credentials, she has specialised in cyberlaw (information/TMT), cyber security, data privacy and governance since 2000 and provided services to public and private sector organisations globally across all sectors. In 2012 she immigrated to Australia and co-founded Information Legal Pty Ltd in 2013, as a uniquely differentiated risk and advisory service founded on a belief that cyberlaw is empowering and that it is essential to know one’s rights.
Her professional affiliations and memberships are numerous, and include appointment as a Member of the Expert Network for the Australian Department of Industry and Science, appointment to the Board of Directors of the Australian Information Security Association, inclusion in the Ducere Global Faculty of thought leadership, and participation in an industry working group for the Prime Minister's Advisory Council on Cyber Security. Her understanding of the relationships between people, information technology, global business, international imperatives and cyber, lie at the heart of Information Legal strategy.
Her current energies are directed at establishing recognition of new norms in Cyberspace, including the development of international law and ethics in support of a continuing rules-based global order, where information warfare, big data and privacy issues are so prevalent. As an author she contributed to Women in the Security Profession. A Practical Guide for Career Development. As a keynote speaker at AISACrypt 2014 in Taiwan she presented on the Legal Infrastructure Around Information Security in Asia for the International Association of Cryptographic Research (IACR), and at the IEEE PerCom workshop on Security Privacy and Trust in the Internet of Things (SPT-IoT) 2017 in the USA on Law, Ethics and the Internet of Things.
Speaker 2: Brenda Monaghan - Commissioner, Information & Public Interest Disclosures, Northern Territory Government.
Since 2010, Brenda Monaghan has been the Commissioner for Information (FOI and Privacy) and the Commissioner for Public Interest Disclosures (whistleblower investigations) in the NT.
Brenda has lived in Darwin with her family since 1986. She has a varied career as a private lawyer, a judicial registrar, a law lecturer at NTU (now CDU), legal member on the former Northern Territory Licensing Commission and a senior executive in the Department of Justice. Brenda’s current role as Information Commissioner includes investigating privacy complaints, reviewing FOI decisions made by public bodies and providing advice to government and others on FOI and privacy issues.
