Cyber Security Education and Training – Panel Discussion 

Speakers/Panel Members: 

Paul Nevin of Cybermerc
Paul Nevin is a career IT security professional with over 20 years’ experience in forensics and incident response roles in Government and industry.  He became fascinated with cyber security education when studying attacks by state-actors (APT's) in the early 2000’s and trying to teach SOC teams how to identify and interpret the sparse evidence that highly skilled attackers leave behind.  Paul teaches Cyber Intelligence Analysis and Active Cyber Defence techniques through his Canberra based company, Cybermerc.   Cybermerc is the primary participant in a Cooperative Research Centres Project (CRC-P) code named IRONPYRITE; designed to bring academia, industry and government together to share cyber intelligence with academia and drive innovation.  Paul is also an adjunct lecturer at ADFA in the UNSW IT Masters program.

Mark Hofman of Shearwater & SANS (Instructor)
Mark Hofman is a director and founder of Shearwater Solutions and has over 25 years' experience in ICT Security. He has worked for both private industry and government and has provided a wide range of information security consulting services to numerous organizations, including the financial sector, private sector, and government organizations. Mark is currently a certified instructor for the SANS Institute. He has had a number of publications, has trained and lectured internationally, and is a handler for the Internet Storm Center.

Silvio Cesare of UNSW 
Dr Silvio Cesare is the Director of Education - Cyber Security at UNSW Canberra @ ADFA. In his role, he oversees the quality of content and delivery in cyber education from undergraduates to postgraduates and professional courses. He has worked extensively in industry over a span of 20 years, including technical roles in offense and defense. He commercialized his Ph.D. research on malware variant detection. Additionally, he was the scanner architect at Qualys - the world's leader in vulnerability assessment. He has over 430 academic citations on google scholar and has presented in industry, including 4 times at the Black Hat Briefings. He is the cofounder of BSides Canberra - Australia's largest hacker conference, CSides, and InfoSect - Canberra's hacker space.

Nathan Clarke of Telstra.
Nathan is currently an Incident Response Manager with Telstra providing managed cyber security services to the Australian Defence Force. He was formerly a member of the Australian Regular Army and worked in the ADF CIRT. Nathan held multiple training roles in the ADF and produced a training framework and content for ADFCIRT, contributed to major joint projects training needs analyses for cyber security training requirements, and continues to contract back to defence in his spare time for other joint projects requiring cyber security subject matter expertise. He is passionate about people and training and recognises that technology alone will not win the day.
