Topic: BYO Computing

Traditionally, there has been a reliance on an 'anchored' workspace (desktops and offices). However, in recent years, there has been a move to laptop and mobile computing. Trends suggest that smart devices such as iPads will continue to have an increased role in the workplace in the coming years. The rapid rate of change has introduced challenges to maintaining a traditional Standard Operating Environment. Some organisations have responded with the option for employees to "BYO" (Bring Your Own) devices.

Bring Your Own ("BYO") computing has however been largely driven by the explosion of mobile device usage in recent years. From connecting the boss' newest iPad, to wider scale use of personal devices (e.g. smart phones for remote access to email/calendars), the line between our work and personal lives is becoming increasingly blurred. With this has come a shift in employee expectations regarding use of these platforms, access to information and the flexibility of organisations' IT departments to respond to these demands. As more staff choose to use their own devices in the workplace, CIOs are being asked to manage the risks associated with protecting corporate data on a range of unsupported devices.

This month's panel session will focus the security risks and response to BYO computing including:

  • The trend of BYO computing in the work place.
  • Security threats of consumer devices in the work place.
  • The response of organisations in defining BYO computing policies.
  • Responses to organisation requirements (e.g. occasions when any device used for professional purposes might need to be inspected by the employer: for IT support, auditing or legal reasons).
